Beyond Meat: Is it a Healthy Option?

By Ileana Zambrano

A few weeks ago, while I was on my way on the bus, I was listening to two-person discussing why it is necessary to stop eating meat, one person was saying that she was vegan, and his partner explained that he could not stop consuming at least one portion daily; a suggestion offered by the vegan person was to start reducing the amount per day and, also try “beyond meat” option, he said that if he began to do that he would be healthier and would feel better.

After that, I was thinking of that choice (beyond meat), besides I had already noticed that nowadays there are many restaurants with this menu to vegetarians and vegans. Yet, how healthy can it be? would it be a better option? Is it convenient to stop eating meat?

(Nosh, 2019)

I started seeking information and found that, for example, The Beyond Burger contains close to 20 ingredients, including refined coconut oil, pea protein isolate, and flavoring. According to Schwartz, this food qualifies as a highly processed food (Telpner M., 2019). This left me thinking that if we wanted to eat healthily, it would be necessary to look for other options. Moreover, the market sells us the perception through advertising that this type of “meat” is a plant-based food, and therefore it is healthy. Additionally, many people believe it when they hear others’ experiences. Unfortunately, these individuals do not research deeply, instead, they only read the ingredients when they buy these products.

Consumers are blind when they buy food thinking it’s healthy because once the food has been processed, the main element disappears, no matter whether it is plant-based (Bharti B., 2019).

Watch out with what you eat!!!!

By Carlos Carrillo

Is eating meat a healthy choice? As far as I remember I was raised eating all types of meat, I can tell you that I ate at least one portion of this protein every day while I lived with my parents. Moreover, it is a quite normal diet for a country where the livestock farming accounts for a significant portion of the GDP (Tapasco, Lecop, Ruden, Rivas, & Ortiz, 2019). I was always told that I must eat meat to grow healthy and strong, besides I cannot deny that I enjoy eating a juicy piece of beef. However, ten years ago, I started to notice that several anti-meat movements had arisen as well as studies of which associated meat consumption with diseases such as cancer. Hence, I became involved in the topic, consequently, I began to make my research what it led to me to read various scientific articles. Yet, it was not until I watched “What the health” a fascinating documentary on Netflix which thoroughly explains the correlation between meat and cancer that I made up my mind to change my diet.

As if this were not enough, several studies have demonstrated that meat production has a severe environmental impact (Carrington, 2018). Having said that, I do not pretend you to stop eating meat, I have not even stopped eating it, yet I have considerably reduced its consumption. Besides, you can start making a few changes, and you will surely improve with time. I can assure you that this brings you great satisfaction to your life. I highly urge you to validate all that I written here so that you can begin your way to a better lifestyle.

Here, I leave the link so that you can watch the documentary:

What’s the Beef with Beef?

By Ileana Zambrano

It has been a long time since I last felt this good.  I have lost weight, I feel more energetic, and I am not hungry.  Best of all, I have been able to stick with this diet for much longer than with any other diet I had tried before.  And believe me, guys, when I tell you I have tried every diet there is: Paleo, Keto, The South Beach Diet, Dukan, Atkins… you name it.  This one, though, The Carnivore Diet, has not only worked, but it’s also the most delicious, because I get to eat meat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

A lot has been said about an excessive consumption of meat.  A study published in the US National Library of Medicine affirms that too much meat leads to cardiovascular disease, colorectal cancer and type 2 diabetes (Battaglia, Baumer, Conrad, Darioli, Schmid, & Keller, 2015). However, a more recent article of the Annals of Internal Medicine reads:  “We found low to very low certainty evidence that diets lower in unprocessed red meat may have little or no effect on the risk for major cardiometabolic outcomes and cancer mortality and incidence” (Johnston BC., Zeraatkar D., Han MA., et al., 2019).  So… who should we believe? I am a firm believer that nobody knows your body better than yourself, and if you are feeling good, is because everything is good.  Over time, different studies and investigations deliver conflicting results.  What is good today, is reported to be lethal tomorrow.  So, for the time being, I have decided I will continue with my Carnivore Diet, and I will continue enjoying its benefits… After all, humans didn’t fight to be at the top of the food chain just to eat veggies, right?
